Training Tomorrow’s “Timothys” Today: The Vision for Multiplication and Reproduction
Text: 2 Timothy 2:1-2
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
And the things thou has heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
Apostle Paul’s Leadership and Its Significance
Apostle Paul was a visionary: a forward-thinking leader, spiritual mentor, outstanding theologian, and a compassionate missionary; a one-on-one disciple- maker, and a great valiant for the truth.
Throughout his leadership and ministry, he trained great leaders, established churches, ordained elders, formulated, emphasized, and set forth the New Testament doctrine of divine grace. He defended the biblical truth from heretical teachers, exalted the supremacy and the pre-eminence of the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
He traveled widely across the Greek and the Roman world, and throughout the Mediterranean region, shaping the destiny and civilization of nations by heralding Christ as the one and only Savior to remedy human ruins, maladies, and evil caused by the Adamic Fall in the Garden of Eden.
Among the outstanding torch-bearers whom Paul had raised up and mentored in the Lord’s work, Timothy, his beloved son in the faith, was chosen to be his successor and trusted missionary companion throughout his ministry.
The Overview of 2 Timothy
2 Timothy was written in a Roman prison by the Apostle Paul to his son Timothy. He wrote this final letter under the imminent shadow of execution, decreed by the Roman Emperor, Nero, in A.D. 67. In a nutshell, in these four chapters of 2 Timothy, Paul gives four solemn charges to Timothy: to guard the Gospel, suffer for the Gospel, continue in the Gospel, and to preach the Gospel (1:14; 2:3; 3:14; 4:2).
In our training for tomorrow's “Timothys” today, it is vitally important that dedicated “Timothys” must guard or keep the gospel faithfully from error and from contamination. They must suffer for it bravely and joyfully like a soldier; to continue in the Gospel’s truth steadfastly against the storm of on-going turbulence, and the cross-current of the apostasy of our times. Finally, to preach (herald) the Gospel with unquenchable passion and fervor. This is true disciple-making; biblically focused with grounded vision and strategic thinking in Christian leadership. In other words, people, cultures, contexts, times and generations may change, but what you hand over, the torch of the Gospel, should be the same and it should never change. The context may change but the content must be the same. The Gospel should neither be trimmed, nor truncated, nor diluted, nor adulterated, nor manipulated, nor cheapened, nor subverted; most importantly, without addition and subtraction.
For example, in the Indian context, we may give the “Living Water” in an Indian cup to the Indian people. The cup (context), culturally speaking, may change from country to country, but the “Living Water” no matter where you are, shall still be the “Living Water” and it cannot be substituted or altered in any form or shape. The only authentic Gospel is the Gospel according to the Scripture. As Paul warned the Galatians, “. . . if any man preach any other Gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:9)! Therefore, the trained “Timothys” of today must be faithful to the truth of the Word of God.
These solemn charges are applicable to all the present and future “Timothys” whom God would call for the ministry of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My sustained conviction is that the greatest need of the hour is to prepare a new generation of soul-hot, Spirit-filled, Christ-centered, God-saturated, and anointed expository (biblical) preachers who would thunder God’s Word without compromise, without manipulation, without distortion, without adulteration and without contamination of the truth.
Furthermore, the crying need of the hour is the accurate transmission and the preservation of the apostolic doctrine to be handed down from generation to generation; unchanged and intact like in the Olympic Torch Race! Remember one thing about the Olympic torch: the people, culture, context, and time may change, but the torch which you are handing over should never change. In other words, Timothy’s torch must be Paul’s torch! This is what “the passing of the torch” is for us today in God’s work.
These are the times when the churches are bending or caving, into relativism, anti-supernaturalism (domestication of the Holy Spirit), skepticism, extra-biblical revelationism, and the marginalization of the Word of God. Training of a new generation of “Timothys” today is the urgent need of the hour in times like these!
Looking outside of the Church, externally speaking, we live in a chaotic world of international tension and political turmoil. There is a real sense of a pandemic of hopelessness and despondence; intellectual, moral, and spiritual darkness upon which millions are stumbling and grappling with each day. We are losing the world. In a time such as this, young and dedicated “Timothys” are to be trained to confront the forces of evil and to meet the human crises. In every generation God has raised up, called, forged, and anointed mighty weapons of war to fight the good fight of faith and win. This generation will not be an exception!
Training of “Timothys” Is a Biblical Pattern
People often ask me, “What is the success of your ministry?” My answer has been, “True success in my ministry is equipping, training and raising up successors to pass on the torch of the Gospel.” In the Old Testament, Joshua was the successor of Moses. Elisha was the successor of Elijah, and Elisha trained men for the prophetic ministry in the school of the prophets which he established. Solomon became the torch-bearer of David and the Levitical priesthood, after 30 years of priestly service at the age of 50, passed on the priestly ministry to the younger generation of priests in Israel.
In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul trained Titus, Timothy, Luke, Tychicus, and many others during his missionary travels. The supreme example of all can be found in Jesus Christ, the Master-trainer who trained a group of disciples who became the Apostles of the New Testament Church!
Theological Grounding Is Pivotal in Training Tomorrow’s “Timothys” Today
The essential part of training future leaders involves theological education, spiritual conditioning, one-on-one discipleship, servant-molding, and personal transformation. In order to nourish the flock in the solid meat of the Word and to defend the truth; to expose erroneous and heretical teaching, tomorrow’s “Timothys” must be trained as a trend today. For effective church planting and powerful dissemination of the Gospel proclamation, young “Timothys must have a global vision through mentoring them and making them disciple-makers. In this regard, the churches must invest their resources as the highest priority – the “summon bonum” in theological education and training.
“Timothys” must cultivate and develop leadership through personal discipline and spiritual impartation. They must be strengthened in grace by connecting to the power supply – the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Not only that, but each “Timothy” must find faithful men who will teach others who are competent in teaching and preaching as well. In essence, this is leadership in the making, multiplication, and disciple-making of the current leadership in ministry. It is cultural, cross-cultural, multi-cultural, glocal missionary (“glocal” meaning local and global) leadership and training (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). We have the message, the mandate, the method of training “Timothys”; the supreme example of Christ’s disciple-making in the Bible, and the privilege of power by the Holy Spirit. We dare not fail with excuses.
The Vision of the Hope for Asia Bible College and Seminary
It has been the burning passion under our leadership to train a new generation of tomorrow’s “Timothys” for the Lord’s work in India. It is a vision for multiplication. We are born to reproduce.
For the past 25 years, my wife and I have been equipping dedicated soldiers of Jesus Christ to proclaim the Gospel throughout India. We have been providing full scholarships to all since the birthing of this school until this very day. Through God’s grace, we offer both Bachelor of Theology and Master of Divinity degrees with academic excellence and global missionary vision. Many of our graduates have gone and established Spirit-filled churches, and are currently discipling others cross- culturally. We have seen with our own eyes the fruit of our investments in the lives of this indigenous force, on the frontline. Moreover, many of our graduates are in high levels of leadership in various denominations throughout India and beyond.
Expository preaching is our concentration at Hope for Asia Bible College and Seminary. We believe that biblical preaching is authoritative preaching. Because God’s Word is self-attested, our authority comes from the Word preached under the unction of the Holy Spirit. It is our conviction that India should not be denied the greatest expository preaching by the trained “Timothys” of today!
It is our biblical mandate to reach the untold, teeming millions with the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. The time is now! It is now or never. The Day of our Lord’s return is fast approaching. Should we go empty-handed to meet our Lord? How much more we could have done to win some lost souls of India and beyond is the greatest challenge for us today. The question from our Lord will not be what have we done, but what more we could have done.
Metaphorically speaking, training tomorrow’s “Timothys” today, in essence, is not to give one a fish to eat but teaching one how to catch fish, so that there will be a steady supply of fish being caught to feed oneself and others. Training the next generation of “Timothys” is the need of the hour!
The training at Hope for Asia Bible College and Seminary involves intimacy with the Master, enduring afflictions and hardship as dedicated soldiers of Jesus
Christ. It also demands fighting the good fight of faith and winning the Lord’s battle. May God help us!
